This year’s Recycle Week theme is ‘Rescue Me’ - a campaign focussed on rescuing recyclable items from heading to the rubbish bin.
At Murray Steels, sustainability is integral to our operations with extensive recycling efforts embedded into our everyday processes, demonstrating our commitment to protecting the environment, and reinforcing our ISO 14001 accreditation, which emphasises environmental management and the responsible use of resources.
What measures do we have in place?
- Our steel profiling process generates skeletons from nested plates after the cutting stage. These leftover steel pieces are efficiently recycled, ensuring no material is wasted. By recycling steel, we reduce our environmental footprint while contributing to a circular economy, closing the loop by reintroducing valuable steel back into the supply chain.
- We also apply this philosophy to maintaining our equipment. We fabricate our own replacement cutting bed sections in-house, reducing the need for external sourcing and further promoting self-sufficiency.
- When sections are replaced, the used ones are also recycled, contributing to our zero-waste goal - all in line with ISO 14001’s principles of sustainability.
Beyond steel…
Our recycling efforts extend beyond steel.
- We responsibly manage and recycle materials such as aerosols, redundant drilling coolant, and waste condensate from our compressors, ensuring that hazardous waste is disposed of in an environmentally safe manner, complying with both ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards. This not only helps protect the environment but also safeguards our workers’ health and safety.
- We also maintain a strong commitment to recycling everyday office waste, like paper and cardboard, making sure that even the smallest materials contribute to our overall environmental efforts, and a reduction in landfill waste.
“We believe that recycling is not just a task - it’s an ongoing responsibility. By implementing these practices, we strive to create a greener future and play our part in supporting the UK’s recycling initiatives.”
